About James
Hi - I’m James, an undergraduate scholar in chemistry at the University of Oxford. Previously, I completed A-levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics, as well as an EPQ in motorsport engineering, achieving high A*s in all. I also worked as a study skills mentor and a volunteer academic mentor for a range of students across the UK.
At university, I was made a scholar after achieving a first class result at the end of my first year, ranking 3rd in my cohort of 180, and have prepared a range of resources to help students with applications and interviews to Oxbridge and other universities.
Furthermore, I ranked 4th nationally in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and achieved gold awards in the RSC Chemistry Olympiad two years in a row. I’m excited to use my experience here to help students excel at these competitions.

I am familiar with the syllabi and mark schemes for all major A-level exam boards in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Chemistry, allowing me to tailor lessons to the specific requirements of the student’s course and exams.
My teaching style is highly interactive and discussion based. I encourage students to develop their understanding through carefully chosen questions and prompts, helping them build a stronger theoretical foundation and greater confidence in the material. Sessions are designed to be similar in style to a one-to-one Oxbridge tutorial, where students are actively engaged in solving problems and exploring concepts rather than passively listening.
Once the underlying theory is secure, I turn to exam technique. We work through past paper questions, identify common pitfalls, and develop strategies for maximising marks by using key words and phrases that frequently appear in mark schemes, giving students the best possible chance of improving, regardless of what grades they are currently working at.
I'll typically use the interactive Miro whiteboard during lessons to communicate written ideas and diagrams, and provide handouts and other resources via Google Classroom.
After the lesson, I provide follow-up questions designed to make the student ponder the topic at hand between lessons, allowing deeper reinforcement of understanding.
