About Lawrence

I am currently an A level student at a Grammar school in London. I have experience teaching sailing to all ages, as well as some race coaching. I have some experience tutoring academically, although I am relatively new to the field. I like to make education a fruitful, productive and fun experience, rather than the repetitive chore it often becomes. Apart from my academic studies I enjoy classical piano and competitive sailing (at international level), both of which I have been doing for many years.

My teaching method revolves around what I have found to be successful in my on, as well as my peer’s education, through my experiences. As a student in full time education, I am constantly surrounded by different teaching methodologies, from which I can pick out ideas and practices that not only improve my own as well as peers academic performance, but leave students wanting to progress their own education.
Through my own academic success (eight grade 9s, one grade 8 and one grade 7 at GCSE, as well as A* and A grade A-Level predictions) I have found that maths and physics, as well as other subjects, are achieved highly in when learned using a cycle:

- Learning new content
- Practising methods used in new content, until the underlying skills are firmly established
- Apply skills to exam style questions
- Practicing exam applications of these skills (past papers are ideal for this)
- Reviewing questions answered incorrectly to identify areas where improvement is desired
- Focussing on areas of improvement, while upholding other skills.

The importance of practising exam questions and, ideally past papers, is key, amd compounded by reviewing mark schemes and examiners notes. After gaining the underlying skill set of any subject, but particularly maths and the sciences, I have found that true academic success comes in understanding the exam papers, and how marks are awarded. My methodologies ensure all of this is integrated seamlessly.

This cycle is one that has proved very successful for myself, as well as the numerous peers I have passed it on to:

I have a good friend, who achieved C and D grade equivalents throughout his GCSE mathematics course. Towards the end of the two year course, when he showed an interest in improving his grades in order to access his desired A level courses, I passed this technique onto him. By the time he came to sit his exams, he was working at A/A* level in mathematics, and eventually achieved a grade 7 (A), only a few marks shy of a grade 8 (A*).

This proven methodology is one that not only produces academic results, but also shows instant improvement to students, inducing a positive attitude towards study.
