About the lesson

Lesson Plan: Basic Nail Care, Manicuring & Nail Art Grade Level/Audience: Beginner (Teens & Adults) Lesson Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will understand the fundamentals of nail care, perform a basic manicure, and create simple nail art designs. Materials Needed: Nail clippers Nail files and buffers Cuticle pushers & cuticle oil Hand scrub and moisturizer Base coat, nail polish, and top coat Nail art brushes, dotting tools, and stickers Acetone and cotton pads UV lamp (for gel polish) Lesson Breakdown: 1. Introduction to Nail Care (20 minutes) Discussion Topics: Importance of nail hygiene Nail anatomy (cuticle, nail plate, free edge, nail bed) Common nail issues (brittleness, fungus, hangnails) Do’s and Don’ts of nail health Activity: Demonstrate how to properly trim and file nails to prevent splitting. Have students practice shaping nails on themselves or a partner. 2. Basic Manicuring Steps (30 minutes) Step-by-Step Demonstration: Soak hands in warm water with mild soap (5 min). Exfoliate with a hand scrub and rinse. Push back cuticles using a pusher (avoid cutting unless necessary). Moisturize hands and nails with lotion and cuticle oil. Buff nails for smoothness and shine. Apply a base coat, two coats of polish, and a top coat. Activity: Students perform a full manicure on themselves or a partner. 3. Introduction to Nail Art (30-40 minutes) Techniques Covered: Dotting (flowers, polka dots) Striping (lines, French tips) Sponging (ombre effect) Stickers and decals Activity: Students choose and practice one or two designs using dotting tools and brushes. Optional: Introduce gel polish and UV curing for advanced learners. 4. Recap & Q&A (10 minutes) Review key points. Troubleshoot common manicure mistakes. Discuss safe removal techniques for polish and gel nails. Encourage students to practice at home. Assessment & Wrap-Up: Observe technique and sanitation habits. Encourage creativity in nail art designs. Provide a short quiz or discussion questions on nail care. Offer tips for maintaining healthy nails between manicures.
