About Barbara
I understand the rigors of high school and college English courses.
I majored in English Language and Composition for my BA and went on the specialize in ESL, and obtained a Certification in Teaching English as a Second Language. This was followed by a MA in Linguistics, and I tutored ESL students during these courses. I then obtained a MA in Education with a specialty in reading instruction.
I understand how closely reading and writing skills are connected. I am careful to have the students tell me about their reading and writing experiences. I make sure students are relaxed with these tasks; this creates an atmosphere for them to gain increased reading and writing skills.

Teaching Methods: sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary, sequencing and connection of ideas
Students lesson plan: identify reading/writing task
Highlight what needs to be explain i.e. examples, supporting ideas
Make outline - list ideas and relevance to task, set priority (which is the most important)
Make each sentence support the subject - summarize in conclusion of idea
Have students use references , dictionary, thesaurus
I am set apart as a tutor because I emphasize vocabulary development and reading comprehension
