About Erik
20 years in the classroom has given me a huge toolbox from which to draw the appropriate ways to mediate, or enrich. My tutoring services would be most appropriate for grades 3-6 learners who are in search of enrichment, they want to go farther in a given academic area than public school allows, or need mediation, to bring them up to grade level or pass a state test.
Over my time in public schools I have encountered all levels of academic achievement and engagement. My teaching method is to meet the student where they are in their skills, knowledge and engagement and work with the learner to help them grow.

Over my 20 year journey as an elementary school teacher I discovered that there are two ways to approach curriculum. 1. Force the learner into the curriculum, like a round peg into a square hole, or 2. Mold the curriculum around the learner. My experience was that choice 2 produced happier students and better outcomes. There is not now, nor has ever been, a one size fits all when it comes to learners.
A typical lesson plan any learners would experience could look like this:
1. Begin with a warm-up.
2. Engage the learner in the days topic, and garner background knowledge.
3. Present new information in several modalities (dependent upon the ways tutees take in information)
4. Use formative assessments throughout and adjust my delivery to accommodate misunderstandings.
5. Assess for understanding, and plan next steps with the learner.
My tutoring services are most appropriate for grade 3-6 learners that are looking for enrichment, that is, they want to go farther or learn more about a topic or skill than is possible in a public school setting, or mediation, namely receiving assistance to reach grade level, or pass the state test.
