PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
MYLES GLADSTONE

Often times, as my memory took a trip into my formative years, I tried to name as many of my teachers as possible. This was successful through elementary school but then it stopped. I wondered why and soon discovered that it was because those were the best teachers in my educational experience. Without even recognizing it, their method of classroom management mirrors what I have been successful with for many years and in numerous hispanic countries.
Listening in our adult world has become a lost art. So many people are so rushed in their daily lives that, for them, there is time for talking but not for listening. I believe that regardless of the age of a student, there will be feedback as to what that student would like to learn and, in the upper grades, how the lessons should be taught. It is critical that the teaching be all inclusive, not directed to the weakest nor the strongest. Often times, I have paired up stronger students with weaker ones, always rotating the pairs so that my intent would not be obvious.
Connecting the classroom material to the outside world is vital toward creating a whole human being, one with solid self-esteem and with an eagerness to serve the community. Over many years, my youngest students, starting with kindergarten, have been involved in service projects. This is a passion for me. I want students to understand how fortunate they are to be living in this country. That notion becomes meaningful when they meet those who are less fortunate and have that wonderful internal feeling that comes with being good citizens.
Thousands of kids have been in my classrooms over the years. It has always been my desire to know the family. This allows me a much better composite of the student. I hope that I have the chance to continue my work with young people as a member of your team.
