About Terry
After leaving journalism I briefly joined IBM as a contract on-site computer trainer, coaching workers, one-on-one, mostly in database management applications.
I then began doing vocational classroom instruction in computer basics; hardware, software, touch-typing, ten-keying, word processing, spreadsheets, database basics, internet searches, email, job development (resume preparation and interview training.)
The vocational training (11 years) led to doing corporate contract training (4 years) mostly banks and dealerships, and mostly training in internet use, email marketing and word processing.
I enjoyed rewarding results from the vocational students who often were new to computers, new to keyboarding and frequently not English proficient (and I am not bilingual), but it worked.
Students ranged in age from 18 to 61 years. Nearly all students were preparing to re-enter the job market after injury or downsizing and needed computerized office skills to become job-competitive. I wrote scores of reference letters for the most capable graduates and estimate that my classroom instruction prepared more than 350 students with new job skills.

As a journalist I learned to ask the effective questions that allowed me to readily understand a person's present situation or challenges. It also helps reveal to them my best intentions for improving the future.
By exchanging questions, a learner and I are able to know something of each other's character and I can demonstrate my patient side, my openness and my sense of humor.
This swapping of questions helps to get a learner comfortable with grilling me, thus giving me a clearer understanding of what help is needed. It also serves as a kind of lesson 'warm-up' .
Then, with an objective made clearer, we can proceed to the main activity, perhaps a mini-lesson and some practice exercises.
As we near the end of a session, I can complete an assessment and determine some appropriate on-your-own practice challenges and agree on next-session goals.
