My guitar lessons with Dan began six years ago during lockdown. My aim was to get a proper grasp of the instrument. Starting online had its perks—namely the ease of simply walking into the next room to begin my lesson. Now that I have more time six years later in retirement, I’m enjoying weekly in-person sessions. Learning guitar with Dan has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made.
Dan unlocked rhythm reading for me early on, along with the left and right-hand studies that formed the foundation I needed to establish with a professional tutor to get proper feedback. He keeps a close eye on my posture and technique, offering subtle tweaks that make my playing noticeably more comfortable and fluid. In the very same lesson, he develops my understanding of theory and customizes the session to the music I enjoy listening to and playing—from Morricone and acoustic blues pieces to lead lines by The Blues masters and also our 80’s favorites The Cult and Echo & the Bunnymen—keeping me step-by-step moving in the right direction.
Dan balances a friendly vibe and creativity with deep theoretical knowledge, providing solutions drawn from his wide experience and musicality. Lessons are always upbeat, and he is simply great company. He’s helped me move from basic tabs to playing by ear with a groove, improvising blues in real time, playing in a band with friends, and achieving RSL grades. After all these years, I regard him as an excellent tutor and friend. I give his teaching a high recommendation.5/5 Stars! Highly recommended guitar and music teacher.
I've been playing guitar on and off for most of my life. I never seemed to get anywhere until recently. I briefly had lessons 20 years ago, however they never really worked out. When I moved to Teddington a few years ago I was curious to learn that there was a guitar teacher nearby - that was Dan Joseph. I was rusty in all areas of my playing, plus my music theory was sketchy at best. We quickly identified where I wanted and needed to improve - pretty much everything. A methodical and structured approach was embarked upon, utilising both fingerstyle and plectrum. Chords and chord theory, particularly jazz chords and harmony. A bit of classic rock, e.g. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc. Learning to read tabs. Learning proper music notation is something I'm looking forward to learning. Dan has answered my many questions regarding theory. A mostly self-taught musician like me can get some funny ideas about musical rules and guidelines and he puts me on the straight and narrow. When I find tunes that I want to play, even fairly complex jazz tunes, Dan is able to play pretty much anything and teaches it to me. He is particularly patient in ensuring that I know why things happen in a piece of music, not just the physical aspects of learning a tune. My technique has improved massively, that was the first thing I noticed. Dan also teaches singing, he has been helping me there. He also teaches bass, keyboards and music production. I have not tried them yet but I know that he knows his stuff and has had years of live and studio experience. Dan does online lessons too, which is great if you can't make it over to Teddington.
Dan is a top bloke, we have been to some gigs together and we frequently discuss different types of music that we like. I like to specialise in jazz, Dan is very much an all rounder and specialises in everything. I’ve had the chance to see him perform live with some of his other students. I understand that he has some excellent classical guitarists as students as well as complete beginners.
If you’re looking for effective, insightful music coaching combined with friendly, enjoyable lessons, Dan is outstanding. I have no hesitation in giving him my highest recommendation - five stars. I’m really looking forward to continue studying with Dan and reaching the next level under his guidance. Our 10 year old Daughter has been taking Guitar lessons with Dan Joseph for exactly two years. In Dan’s lessons she has learnt to play very well. She enjoys sharing what she's working on.
During the pandemic our Daughter attended lessons online via Zoom. Music has always been an important part of our Daughter’s life.
We are proud of her achieving distinction at RSL Grade 1 and looks forward to her Acoustic Grade 2 choices, and some Rockschool Classics.
Dan arranges fingerstyle arrangements of her favourite pop songs. And she submits her guitar playing on Dan's practice app. Dan’s Music lessons have been effective at a reasonable price, he often extends lessons when needed. Thanks to Dan our Daughter now has the confidence to perform pieces at school. We highly recommend him to anyone looking for guitar lessons either in-person or online.Dan Joseph has been teaching a group class for my two daughters since January.
He arranges their favourite songs on Guitar and Ukulele to sing and play at home. Dan cares about their progress, planning lessons around their favourites music. He offers feedback on their playing between lessons via his practice app, which helps to keep them on track. In class he teaches a method for them to learn to perform songs accurately. They are excited to take their first RSL grade this summer.
My daughters love playing music even more. Lessons with Dan have been great value. I am very happy to recommend Dan to anyone looking for a Music tutor.
I highly recommend Dan Joseph as a vocal coach! I've been taking lessons with him for 4 years now and have seen significant improvements in my singing abilities and gained the confidence to perform live. Dan accompanies me while I sing covers and my own songs at local music pubs. He helps me write songs and records at his studio. He has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to vocal technique and is able to break down complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand. He’s also incredibly patient and encouraging, which has helped me to enjoy my voice.
I'm grateful for how he has customised his teaching to apply to my taste and helped me overcome individual vocal challenges. Dan’s approach to teaching and how he tailors each lesson to my specific goals. If you're looking for a skilled and supportive singing teacher, Dan Joseph Music is the way to go!
I’ve been studying acoustic guitar with Dan for six months now after initially booking a block of 10 lessons at the start. Dan is a patient, experienced, fun and professional teacher. He customises my lessons to my favourite songs. It’s great fun playing my preferred indie rock songs, Dan always gives me a push and plays along with me. I’m really pleased with Dan’s approach and in a short time I’m now working on finger style too. Due to my hectic family and work schedule I’ve sometimes asked to move/shuffle our appointments and Dan is always accommodating.
He’s been a great teacher and reignited my passion for playing guitar so I’m very happy to recommend him.My daughter (8 years old) started her guitar journey with Dan a few months ago and since then, her progress has been incredible. The lessons are well structured and with the aim to improve and make progress every week. He is very patient, motivates students and definitely takes the time to explain everything, no matter how long it takes. My daughter loves the lessons, Dan's enthusiasm and how precisely he explains what she needs to do. We are very happy and would highly recommend him!
My 6 year old daughter has been attending Dan's lessons for over one year. Through Dan's teaching she has developed an enthusiasm for playing the ukulele and performing. Dan is able to teach her effectively to enable her to learn to play recognisable tunes confidently. His lessons are fun and keep her engaged.
Marie-ClaireFantastic teacher. Very happy to be able develop my playing further with Dan’s help. Friendly, knowledgable and with his help got through the grade 8 guitar exam and passed with distinction.
Would highly recommend. Dan is highly knowledgeable, patient and encouraging. He tailors the online lesson structures and song choices to my preferences. I've learned a lot through my singing lessons with Dan and have had a lot of fun doing it. It's also helped increase my confidence to play in front of others. Thanks for all your help Dan!
Dan is a natural teacher, talented and dependable. I have been learning jazz bass with Dan and trying to improve my reading. I am really pleased with the progress I've made. Dan is extremely knowledgeable and works out very quickly where to focus our efforts. He is friendly and relaxed and the lessons are always enjoyable. Having experience of many musical disciplines, (bass, guitar, singing, composition, theory and recording), Dan is an inspiring model for young and old. Highly recommended.
