I tend to start off with a small test to understand what level the student is at. Afterwards, I follow the curriculum, teaching the topic and testing it with various types of questions. I periodically come back to the topic (1-2 min per lesson) to make sure the student understood the logic behind it and remembers it well. As much as this is my usual working style, it very much depends on the students and their learning style.
