About Grace

My saxophone teaching philosophy is built on the principle that every student deserves personalized, engaging instruction that nurtures both technical ability and musical passion. I prioritize establishing core skills such as breath support, embouchure, posture, finger coordination, articulation, and tone control, as these form the foundation for all advanced playing. I emphasize the importance of intonation, dynamic control, and phrasing, enabling students to convey emotion and style effectively. Improvisation is a key component of my lessons from the outset, helping students develop musical vocabulary, creativity, and spontaneity. I present music theory in an applied manner, connecting scales, chord structures, and harmonic functions directly to repertoire and improvisation exercises, ensuring relevance and comprehension. Repertoire choices are tailored to each student’s interests, covering a broad spectrum from jazz and blues to pop and classical, maintaining engagement and motivation. Goal-setting is a collaborative process, focusing on performance preparation, technical milestones, or creative expression. I incorporate technology like recording tools, backing tracks, and tempo adjustment apps to support efficient practice and critical listening. A highlight of my teaching career was mentoring a student who transformed from hesitant beginner to confident improviser and soloist, which underscored the power of patience, encouragement, and individualized teaching. My ultimate goal is to help students become skilled, expressive, and confident saxophonists, excited to continue their musical exploration.

Teaching saxophone is an art that requires balancing technical rigor with imaginative freedom, and my approach reflects this balance by fostering both skill development and personal expression.

I place great importance on establishing a solid foundation through breath control, embouchure strength, finger coordination, articulation, and tone quality, ensuring students develop good habits that enable fluid, confident playing. Alongside these technical pillars, I emphasize musicality by encouraging improvisation, exploring diverse genres like jazz, classical, blues, and pop, and guiding students to interpret music with feeling and creativity. I tailor lessons to each student’s unique learning style and musical ambitions, whether their goal is to perform on stage, compose original pieces, or simply enjoy playing with friends.

Theory and ear training are woven into lessons to deepen understanding of melody, harmony, and rhythm, empowering students to become more versatile and independent musicians. Technology such as recording apps, metronomes, and backing tracks plays a key role in my teaching, providing immediate feedback and enriching the practice experience. I prioritize performance opportunities, helping students prepare for recitals, auditions, and ensemble participation to develop confidence and communication skills.

One of my proudest moments was supporting a student through a transformation from hesitant beginner to confident soloist by nurturing their improvisational skills and stage presence. My ultimate goal is to cultivate musicians who are technically proficient, creatively inspired, and passionate lifelong learners of the saxophone.
