About Ariel
Hello and welcome to my tutoring page! My name is Ariel McGuire and I am a current Sophomore at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota! Being an undergraduate student, I am pursuing a joint major degree in Music and Biology with a Biochem emphasis.
Although my education is not primarily focused on literature and the English language, my secondary education prepared me well for the complexity and rigor that College classes encompass. More notably, the classes that prepared me for the copious amounts of reading and writing expected of me in college were the AP Lit and Lang classes!
Not only did doing well in those classes in both Junior and Senior year allow me to move ahead of my peers credit-wise, they helped me to become a more concise communicator, especially under pressure. However, it is not easy for many students to do well on an essay, especially due to the time constraints that the AP board places on such tests. Despite this, I believe consistent timed practice and review will give students the confidence to walk into the AP test and effectively strategize their essay writing!

My tutoring lessons are geared towards Junior and Senior Highschool students looking to increase their AP Lang and Lit scores, whether they are struggling or just in need of some more practice!
My methods for AP Lang and Lit are as follows:
- Preparing student with time management skills to form excellent full bodied essays under pressure and within a constrained time limit of 45 minutes by having biweekly practice AP prompts and essays.
- Strengthening reading comprehension under pressure with timed readings/articles.
-Reviewing previous student essays of all AP scores to differentiate a great essay from a subpar one and what we can learn from them
-Focus on what makes a great thesis by reviewing past essays and their corresponding scores.
-Reviewing the rubric of an AP essay and the boards expectations to gauge where student is at in their progress.
As someone who used to struggle writing under pressure and within time constraints, I understand the anxiety and fear that can generate in students who do not have or know how to make a strategic plan for the AP Lang and Lit exams. I take a careful and compassionate approach with students and guide them towards greater understanding and preparedness for such exams!
