About Austin

I've helped students transform D's into A's, while others I've coached and mentored have gone on to pursue STEM degrees at universities including Yale, Duke, NYU, UNC–Chapel Hill, the University of Virginia, and the University of Michigan. Whether a student is struggling with foundational algebra or preparing for the demands of an elite university, I bring the same objective to every engagement: developing mathematical ability far beyond what the student previously believed possible.

I'm Matthew "Austin" Lewis, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an educator with experience teaching mathematics at an International Baccalaureate (IB) magnet school, and a private mathematics tutor with over 12 years of experience.

A Proven Record of Academic Excellence:

For students who begin early enough, attend consistently, and put in the necessary effort, the vast majority of my long-term students ultimately earn an A in their mathematics course. I've helped students achieve dramatic academic turnarounds within a single semester, while others have progressed into advanced mathematics and rigorous STEM programs at some of the nation's most prestigious universities.

But what distinguishes my work isn't simply the academic results. It's the transformation that makes those results possible.

Some of my proudest accomplishments have come from working with students who initially believed mathematics simply wasn't their strength. Over time, I've watched those same students develop remarkable mathematical intuition, approach increasingly complex problems with confidence, and become substantially more capable of learning unfamiliar concepts independently.

My Background:

My teaching philosophy is deeply influenced by my own experience learning mathematics.

For years, I encountered mathematical concepts presented through formulas and procedures without enough attention to the reasoning behind them. It wasn't until I began exploring those ideas independently that I discovered just how logical, interconnected, and fascinating mathematics could be.

That discovery transformed my understanding of mathematics and continues to influence how I approach explaining complex ideas to students.

Over the following 12 years, I've refined my ability to recognize how students think, understand why certain concepts fail to click, and communicate sophisticated mathematical ideas with clarity.

My experience also includes working with students with ADHD, autism, test anxiety, and executive functioning challenges. I've found that the most effective instruction begins with understanding the individual student rather than expecting every student to learn the same way.

My Philosophy:

Mathematical ability isn't simply something students are born with. It's something they can systematically develop.

I believe exceptional mathematics education does more than improve grades or prepare students for examinations. It fundamentally strengthens their capacity to reason, recognize patterns, make connections, and acquire new knowledge.

What excites me most is watching that development unfold. Students who once needed extensive guidance gradually become confident, independent mathematical thinkers. Concepts that previously seemed overwhelming become intuitive, and unfamiliar challenges become opportunities to apply the abilities they've developed.

My ultimate ambition is not simply to help students master the mathematics they're studying today, but to leave them far better equipped to master the mathematics they'll encounter tomorrow.

I believe the greatest measure of my success as an educator isn't how many problems I help a student solve, but how much more capable that student becomes of solving problems without me.

I take a deliberate, highly individualized approach to developing exceptional mathematical ability. My role is to identify precisely what's holding a student back, determine what needs to change, and establish a clear path toward the level of academic performance we're pursuing.

Rather than approaching tutoring as a series of disconnected lessons, I take responsibility for directing each student's mathematical development. Every session builds on a continuously evolving understanding of their abilities, progress, and academic objectives.

1. Identifying Exactly Where Understanding Breaks Down:

A student can arrive at the correct answer without genuinely understanding the mathematics behind it. Likewise, a student can make a seemingly simple mistake despite having a strong conceptual foundation.

Recognizing these distinctions is central to my instructional approach.

Rather than relying on conventional diagnostic tests, I assess students dynamically through carefully selected sequences of problems. I pay close attention not only to their answers, but to their reasoning, confidence, hesitation, and approach to unfamiliar situations.

Each response informs my next decision. I strategically adjust the problems we explore, progressively refining my assessment until I've identified the underlying misconceptions, missing foundations, or gaps in understanding limiting their progress.

This allows me to focus our time precisely where it will make the greatest difference.

2. Developing Genuine Mathematical Mastery:

Once I understand where a student stands, I structure our instruction around building deep, lasting mathematical understanding.

I don't simply demonstrate solutions and ask students to reproduce them. I teach the reasoning behind mathematical concepts, encourage students to explain their thinking, and introduce carefully chosen problems that challenge them to apply what they've learned in unfamiliar ways.

If an explanation doesn't connect, I find another approach. If a student demonstrates mastery, we advance. If their understanding breaks down when a problem becomes less familiar, we investigate the underlying reason and strengthen it.

I also believe students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions, exploring ideas, and making mistakes. I work to establish that comfort early, allowing our sessions to become both intellectually engaging and highly productive.

As students progress, I gradually introduce greater complexity and independence, developing not just their command of the material, but the mathematical intuition and analytical precision necessary for increasingly advanced work.

3. Directing Exceptional Academic Progress:

Every student begins with different abilities, challenges, and ambitions. My responsibility is to determine the most effective path forward and continually refine our instruction as they progress.

For students who are struggling academically, I focus on correcting the underlying weaknesses responsible for their difficulties, rebuilding essential foundations, and accelerating their progress toward top grades. The objective is not simply to prepare for the next examination, but to create an enduring improvement in mathematical performance.

For high-achieving students, I often move beyond the immediate demands of their coursework. We explore more sophisticated problems, examine alternative methods of reasoning, and develop the depth of mathematical understanding necessary to excel in advanced courses and competitive STEM environments.

Throughout our work, I continuously evaluate what the student has mastered, what still requires attention, and where we should go next. The pace, difficulty, and direction of instruction evolve alongside the student's growing abilities.

My objective is to ensure that every lesson contributes to a larger academic transformation—one in which students don't simply perform better, but become increasingly capable of achieving at a level that once seemed beyond their reach.
