About Francis
I enjoy helping you identify why a beat feels comfortable or unsettled. I explain timing in language you can test: which note drifts, where you tense up, and what happens when we simplify a part. I do not expect you to solve every coordination problem by trying the whole pattern harder.
I make space for the music you want to play while encouraging you to listen beyond the drum part. I might ask how the bass line affects your kick pattern or where a singer needs more space. I want your decisions to come from hearing the song, as well as from knowing a pattern.
I give feedback that points to a next action. That might mean relaxing a movement, shortening an exercise, or keeping a successful groove steady before adding another detail. I welcome curiosity and imperfect attempts, and I want you to become comfortable evaluating your own playing without turning every slip into a verdict on your ability.

I begin with the pulse you can feel before adding the patterns you can play. We might speak a rhythm, tap it with one hand, and then move it around the kit. Separating those stages helps you hear the shape of a groove rather than relying on a sequence of movements you cannot yet explain.
I build coordination by changing one part at a time. A beginner can keep a simple beat while exploring where the snare lands; a returning player can rebuild consistency; an experienced drummer can compare hi-hat openings, ghost notes, and kick placement without losing the underlying time. We then put those choices into a song so technique serves the music.
I treat fills as a route back into the groove, with a clear starting point and landing point. Children can learn through call-and-response, while teenagers and adults can analyse recordings or create their own variations. Practice combines short coordination exercises with playing along, and each task has a listening goal rather than a speed target alone.
