About Chelsey
I believe that learning science should foster curiosity while being fun and approachable!
As a lifelong learner myself, I love expanding my mind and indulging in personal “curiosity quests” where I allow a question to lead me down an educational rabbit hole. My hope is that I leave students with the tools and spark to investigate their own curiosity that stays with them outside of the classroom. Even when the subject I’m teaching isn’t someone’s favorite, my goal is that all students walk away with tangible skills, thought processes, and perspectives that will be beneficial no matter where their path may lead.
I believe it is my responsibility to create a welcoming, inclusive, and approachable environment where students of all backgrounds feel safe and comfortable. Each student is different, and it is important as an instructor that I teach in a way that uniquely fits their individual needs.

Following my curiosity, making observations, and asking questions about the world around me is what got me into science in the first place. Scientific knowledge is established by a series of questions, observations, and conclusions, accumulating together to a body of knowledge that gives us insight to the world around us. I believe learning science should mimic this process of discovery rather than memorization. Of course there is the unavoidable responsibility of students to learn and memorize new terms, but after that comes the fun and engaging part of learning. More than teaching science, I believe in strengthening deductive thought processes and critical thinking skills, tools that can stay with students long after class is over. I love connecting with students and helping them understand the material in a way that makes sense to them. Oftentimes I mimic the scientific process to facilitate a question and observation based discussion rather than simply stating facts. This tends to get students more engaged in the conversation and allows me to assess their prior knowledge and how much of the new material they are retaining.
For me, there is nothing better than teaching in an immersive learning environment where students can directly interact with what they are learning. This can look like going for a walk looking at plants and insects, bringing bits of nature inside for examination, watching videos, hands-on activities, discussions, or discussing industry applications. I like to get creative!
With a bachelors in Biology and Masters in Marine Science, I am confident to tutor anyone from kindergarten to the graduate level.
