This introductory course explores the history of art from the Renaissance to the late twentieth century, focusing on the dynamic relationship between artistic movements and the philosophical ideas that coexisted with them. By studying these transformations together, we will examine how shifts in thought—about knowledge, reality, the self, and society—reshaped the ways people perceived, interpreted, and represented the world over time.
The goal of this course is to enable students to understand, analyze, and compare major artistic movements from the Renaissance to the late twentieth century, identifying both their differences and their underlying connections. Students will examine the philosophical ideas that coexisted with each artistic period and explore how those ideas shaped the ways artists understood reality, the self, nature, and society.
At the same time, the course investigates how art and philosophy together influenced broader cultural perspectives within each historical era. By tracing these developments, students will reflect on how past worldviews continue to inform the ways we perceive and interpret the world today.
Beyond recognizing differences among artistic and philosophical traditions, students will also explore their recurring themes and structural similarities, considering how historical ideas remain relevant to contemporary life.
The ultimate aim of the course is to cultivate intellectual and aesthetic confidence: students will be encouraged to trust their own interpretations, develop their own aesthetic framework, and engage with art without fear of judgment.
