About Sophie
Hello and welcome, My name is Sophie. I work as a Teacher of Latin at Brighton College and as a Mental Health Youth Support Worker around East Sussex. I graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a 1st in Classics and went on to complete a Master's in custodial rehabilitation. I started my History Podcast in Lockdown and am continuing the podcast today. The podcast, Sibyl Service interviews historical heroes like Cleopatra, Queen Nefertiti, Marcus Aurelius, Michelangelo, Xenophon, Boudica, Hypatia and Frida Kahlo. It's about bringing the people from the past alive. Please get in touch if you are looking for a tutor!

My approach to tutoring GCSE History is rooted in curiosity. I aim to help students see the subject not as a list of dates and facts, but as a living conversation between past and present. Each lesson focuses on developing both knowledge and analytical skill, understanding causes, consequences, and interpretations, which is key to success in the GCSE exam. My teaching methodology combines structured explanation with guided discussion and active learning. I use timelines, primary sources, and short analytical exercises to build confidence in essay writing and argument development. I encourage students to think like historians: to question sources, make comparisons, and construct balanced, evidence-based arguments. Lessons are highly interactive, adapted to each student’s pace and preferred learning style, ensuring consistent progress. A typical lesson lasts about 60 minutes and includes a mix of review, focused teaching, and practice. I set small, manageable tasks between sessions — often short essays or source analyses — to reinforce learning and improve exam technique. I am currently a Part time teacher of Latin at Brighton College, with three years of experience teaching History from Common Entrance to GCSE. I hold a degree in Classics and curate a history podcast, The Sibyl Service, where I explore themes from Ancient to Modern history through Historical characters. My lessons are ideal for GCSE students who are struggling a bit with confidence and want to start enjoying the subject that I love so much!

I would struggle to find a tutor that is more dedicated to their students than Sophie. She is just great; she doesn't just look at the task ahead but also goes above and beyond through understanding how to get the best results from her students. He has not only helped improve my French but also my drive and focus to do and be the best that I can be.
Sophie commits herself to the task at hand and is consistent and reliable. A very good tutor I will definitely be using again
Me and Sophie went to school together and i can honestly say she is a fantastic teacher. I strongly attribute my GCSE and A level language and Philosophy marks to Sophie's excellent tutoring. She dedicated a huge amount of time to helping me during her own exams.
She is dillent and organised, and an extremely approachable person. I guarantee she will make any student feel comfortable and relaxed in order to get the most out of their learning. Overall, she is an excellent candidate for a tutor if you are looking to achieve fantastic exam results.Sophie has been tutoring french to my little sister who is 13 years old once/twice a week for the last month. Not only has she helped Emily regrow her confidence in speaking the language but Emily actually seems to enjoy learning it for the first time! Her marks have been consistently improving since we started the extra lessons.
This has been a challenging period for us since lockdown and we are so grateful to Sophie for all her help.
Merci beaucoup!View more recommendations
