About Kate

Hello everyone,

My name is Kate and I have a Master’s degree in teaching ESL (MATESL) from Simmons University in Boston, MA.

I have been a teacher for 15 years, and I have, specifically, taught ESL for over 10 years. I have extensive experience teaching and advising adult ESL students (ages 18+), including international students and immigrant populations.

At the college and university level, I have been an ESL teacher, academic advisor, and academic coordinator with a focus on English language acquisition.

I have taught students in Intensive English Programs at Bunker Hill Community College, Roxbury Community College, and Framingham State University. I have also taught students of all ages and ability levels in community-based programs at non-profit agencies.

I was the Academic Coordinator and Lead Teacher of the English Language Programs (ELP) at Framingham State University for three years. I supervised the administration of the: Intensive English Program, Community English Program, “Bridge to University” Program, tutoring program, and individualized study plans for ESL students. I supervised 20 teachers, over 250 immigrant students, and over 60 international students, each semester, in these programs. I directed the intake, registration, placement testing process, and orientation program for new students.

Part of my advising duties included providing academic support, guidance, assistance, and feedback to students regarding their ESL program and classes. I also focused on developing individualized educational plans for students by setting goals and objectives as well as identifying pathways to accomplishing both short-term and long-term academic and career goals.

I graduated with a MATESL (Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language) from Simmons University in 2017 after successfully completing a 120-hour graduate student-teaching practicum at Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC).

My personal philosophy of education is that the most meaningful and effective learning experiences are student-centered, student-driven, and take place in an environment that celebrates diversity and inclusion. I use skills-based, strategy-based approaches that identify and build on students’ current strengths while, simultaneously, applying strategies to work on areas where students need extra help. I provide support and guidance for students in developing study skills, organizational skills, time management, college and career readiness, academic planning, self-advocacy, and goal setting, all of which help students to become independent, lifelong learners.

It is a pleasure to meet all of you, and I look forward to, hopefully, working with you in the future.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Kate, MATESL
.
