I qualified as a secondary school science teacher with a B.Ed (Hons) in 1993 and gained QTS the following year. With decades of experience, I understand exactly what students need to achieve the grades they deserve. My teaching approach blends proven educational methods with personalised strategies that meet each student’s unique learning style.

I design innovative lesson plans that encourage critical thinking and deep understanding. For visual learners, I use a wide range of memory aids, flashcards, and targeted activities to make learning both efficient and enjoyable. I also integrate interactive software and digital resources — including educational games I’ve created — to make lessons engaging, accessible, and fun.

My commitment to fostering a genuine love for science is reflected in my proven results: 100% pass rate across both AQA and Edexcel exam boards. I help students build strong foundations through guided practice, continual quizzing, and extensive examination-style questions to ensure their understanding is thorough and long-lasting.

Creating a supportive, approachable, and mistake-friendly environment is at the heart of my philosophy. I encourage questioning, provide constructive feedback, and teach students how to apply their scientific knowledge in practical and exam contexts — a vital skill for tackling challenging GCSE application and 6-mark questions.

What truly sets me apart is my dedication to tailoring every lesson to each student’s individual needs. Whether you need support with content comprehension, exam technique, or confidence-building, I will create a personalised plan to help you reach your full potential.

Together, we can unlock your capabilities and pave the way for a bright, successful future in science.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My journey into online teaching began during the lockdown phase of the pandemic. Suddenly, the way we approached education shifted and I saw a unique opportunity to reach to students in a new and engaging way. I started developing online resources tailored specifically for GCSE biology and chemistry, recognising the potential for interactive learning experiences even from a distance. It was incredibly rewarding to witness students who initially struggled with the subjects to flourish as I adapted my teaching style to suit their needs.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Teaching biology and chemistry has always been a passion of mine, as both subjects are fundamental in understanding the world around us. I find particular joy in discussing topics that connect to real life scenarios, which help students relate to the material personally. For instance, in biology, I love exploring the intricate processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration because they showcase how life sustains itself. In chemistry, I enjoy discussing chemical reactions and the concept of equilibrium as these notions help students grasp how various substances interact and transform. One of my favourite aspects of teaching the Aqa/ Edexcel syllabus is that I can incorporate current scientific developments such as genetic engineering and sustainable chemistry practices. These discussions not only make the subjects more relatable but also spark critical thinking and curiosity among students, encouraging them to delve deeper into the sciences.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

One of my greatest role models in education has been my former education mentor Mr Wayne. He had an extraordinary ability to make complex concepts accessible and relatable, often using real world examples that ignited our interest in the sciences. Mr Wayne demonstrated patience and empathy, qualities I strive to embody in my own teaching. He taught me the importance of tailoring my resources to meet individual needs, which has become a foundational principle in my online tutoring approach.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my fondest memories from my school days was the first time I conducted an experiment in a primary chemistry lesson. We were tasked with creating a simple vinegar and bicarbonate of soda volcano. As the eruption unfolded, I was captivated not only by the fizz and the bubbles, but by the principles behind it - gas production and acid base reactions. Fast forward to today, I love using similar hands on experiments in my own classroom to ignite that same passion for students in my classes. This inevitably leads to great discussions about topics such as scientific methods and reaction rates. Seeing their eyes light up as they understand the why behind the experiment reminds me of my own experience and this reinforces my belief in experimental learning.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Juggling my role as a part time teacher with family commitments has been quite challenging. While I’m passionate about imparting knowledge to my students, I also want to be present for my family. Balancing lesson planning, student engagement and family responsibilities can be tough. There are days when I feel overwhelmed, especially when trying to ensure that I am providing quality education while also managing everything at home. However I found that this challenge has made me more efficient and creative in my teaching methods, often seeking out resources and strategies that are both engaging and time effective.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion for teaching stems from a deep seated belief that science can explain many aspects of life, and I strive to make complex concepts accessible and enjoyable. Outside of the classroom, I am an avid fan of Formula One and tennis. My interest in Formula One sparks from my enthusiasm for the chemistry involved in aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, as well as the biology for peak performance. For example, understanding the chemical composition of the fuels and how they interact with the engine can be the difference between winning and losing a race. I often bring insights from sports into my teaching, using them as relatable examples to explain scientific principles.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What sets me apart from other online tutors is my ability to build confidence in my students. I believe that when students feel secure in their abilities, they are more inclined to engage in the learning process and strive for excellence. I take the time to understand each student’s unique learning style, which allows me to tailor my approach and foster a supportive environment. Witnessing their progress and self assurance grow is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.
