About Malia

I have a master's degree in Spanish Literature from the University of Hawai'i, but I hold my "diploma de la amistad" from El Colegio Mario Auxiliadora, in Riobamba, Ecuador, to be more formative to my Spanish language.

I have been in-and-out of Spanish teaching for two decades, leaving only to pursue sales (another type of teaching imo). I really love sharing information in a way which makes people ingnite their thirst for even more knowledge.

The schools I have had the pleasure of teaching at are: University of Hawai'i, St. Francis Schools (now closed), St. Andrew's Priory, and Kaimuki High School. The students have been a joy every time!

About the lesson

Spanish in textbooks often involves realia and role-playing in these sort of fake situations. It's cutesy but some students don't really connect to the hypothetical side of it.
I have found that the authentic language in the texts of contemporary songs, paired with their often catchy beats, creates a more genuine and retainable language experience, while putting it to muscle memory though body movement deepens the connection in a playful and delightful way.

A typical lesson would include a song which we would attack a part (or the whole) so that all is understood encyclopaedically. Guidelines would be provided for the student to perform it themself with follow-up questions and activities.
