About Elinor

I am a Maths tutor with over 5 years of teaching experience and hold an MMath degree. My passion goes beyond numbers and formulae—I love exploring the history of mathematics and the evolution of mathematical thought. I enjoy tracing the contributions of ancient civilisations and uncovering how their ideas laid the foundation for modern mathematics. I guide students through the fascinating origins of famous theorems and the stories behind significant discoveries. By connecting mathematical concepts with their historical context, I help learners appreciate how ideas developed over time. This approach makes abstract topics more relatable and sparks curiosity. I encourage students to see mathematics as a cultural and intellectual journey, not just a subject to memorise. We explore the struggles, insights, and creativity of mathematicians across centuries. I also highlight how patterns and numbers influenced art, science, and philosophy throughout history. Through this perspective, students gain a deeper understanding and a lasting appreciation for mathematics. About the lesson

My teaching approach is designed to make higher mathematics accessible and engaging. I focus on building a deep conceptual understanding in areas such as abstract algebra, number theory, mathematical proofs, and other advanced theoretical concepts. Instead of rote learning, I encourage students to explore ideas, ask questions, and see connections between topics. I guide learners through complex theorems step by step, helping them discover their own methods and approaches. Conceptual clarity is key, and I use examples, visualisations, and reflective exercises to make abstract ideas concrete. Problem-solving is integrated with theory, so students not only understand the material but can also apply it confidently. For DIY learners and those who enjoy research, I offer strategies to explore mathematics independently, fostering curiosity and critical thinking. I provide targeted practice and thought experiments to strengthen reasoning skills and develop mathematical intuition. My goal is to help students feel confident tackling challenging problems and thinking creatively. Through gentle guidance and reflective learning, I support students in mastering complex concepts at their own pace.
