About Germaine

About me
I’m a recent Masters graduate from RCS and have been playing violin for almost 20 years. I can teach violin students from absolute beginners to advanced levels, and I have experience teaching both adults and children, the youngest of my past students aged 5. I have performed in all kinds of settings and across genres, from classical to pop concerts—and even done a bit of folk music!

About the lesson

Not sure where to start with the violin? I'd love to help you begin — or pick up where you left off. Almost 20 years playing, and I genuinely love teaching! I offer violin lessons for all levels from beginner to ABRSM diploma level. I am also able to teach beginner Music Theory and basic counterpoint.

First lessons with me…
For complete beginners, starting an instrument can be a daunting prospect. But no worries, I will help you by breaking down the basics into manageable chunks! A typical beginner’s first lesson may include: basic left-hand and right-hand positions, basic posture, basic violin care (esp for online students); and, if time allows, a little tune! Only when you are comfortable with the basics will I start talking about getting any violin books. I highly recommend complete beginners to book in person lessons with me!
For experienced players, I’m happy to pick up from where any previous teachers left off. Or, if you have any specific goals, like exams and competitions, just let me know beforehand and we can discuss planned goals and previous progress (if applicable) as needed. If you are looking to refresh violin playing after having not played for many years, I can help you search for a comfortable place to start again too :)
For experienced players above ABRSM Grade 5 level or equivalent: lesson prices will be adjusted according to the level of playing taught in class.

Teaching approaches
I believe that the most important thing in a violin lesson is that the students enjoy themselves. At the end of the day, music is about connection, not certificates! I can adapt my teaching according to the needs and goals of each student; but no worries if things end up taking longer than expected. As long as you are comfortable and finding lessons fun!
I have experience teaching students with special needs including social anxiety. Parents and past employers have often commented on my ability to build personal bonds with students, and many have rediscovered enthusiasm for practice since studying with me.

I offer lessons that can be 30, 45, or 60 minutes long, and depending on your playing level/goals, I will discuss what lesson lengths are best suited to you.
