About Johan
I have just finished my Masters degree in Medical Biochemistry, and I realised that in A levels and GCSEs, I found it difficult toensure that what I learnt was properly understood. I chose to be lazy and do the minimum work and this lw to me passing but not with good grades like I wanted. I feel like many students find it hard to structure their learning and realise exactly what needs the most attention for a subject topic. I have had a decent amount of experience through mistakes made that helped me realise what I needed to do when looking at a new topic so that I can understand it well without wasting time in the 'learning process' (which I wasn't very clear on). I hope to reach out to struggling students and guide them so that difficult or 'boring' topics can be made easier to understand so that their learning would be easier and time can be used effectively.

I will arrange to have reference material for the topics covered, e.g. textbook and example questions. These will be used together so that the theoretical side of the topic is first covered and generally quizzed on (e.g., through simpler questions likefact recall and small problem solving). The example questions will then be used to test the understanding and these will first be done with the student by asking how they would approach the question, providing tips on how their approach could be improved/changed and then allowing them to do the questions by themselves. The questions will be marked amd mistakes made will be carefully analysed to see if mistakes were made from lack ofunderstanding or carelessness. This can then be used to gauge student progress and how much assistance I need to provide so that they understand the example topic well. Finally, after a certain number of topics have been covered, earlier topics will be re-checked to ensure they were understood rather than just memorised and practice doing more questions or covering past content so that the student doesn't have a superficial understanding of their topics but they can apply their knowledge. When introducing the topic, I will ise analogies or break the concepts down where relevant, which I have found to be helpful and doesn't make certain topics seem as dauntingor difficult as they seem.
