About Joseph
I am currently a studying for my masters degree in mathematics, which I am projected to obtain a 1st in and will be completed in 2021. I have 9 GCSEs graded A*-A, including doing GCSE maths early. As such, I was given the opportunity to study A-Level Maths 1 year early. My other A-Levels were Physics and Further Maths, which I had to entirely self-teach for the two years since my school removed it from the curriculum that year. From primary school through to now, I've always achieved the highest possible academic results in mathematics.
At university, I've volunteered to tutor my peers in the years below me through weekly drop-in sessions. The students bring problems from their example sheets that they are struggling with and I assist them in finding a solution.
During my time in 6th form, I was the only person chosen by the headteacher to give weekly one-on-one maths tutoring sessions to a few bright students in a nearby primary school. These sessions ensured that these students obtained the results they were looking for. I also won the Excellence in Mathematics award from the Khan family during this time.

As an avid lover of all things mathematics, I believe that the best way to teach maths is to empower students as mathematicians and show them that maths makes sense. It helps the student much more when they understand the problem itself, not just the methodology to solve it. I prefer to work with the student, guiding them along and inducing the correct way of thinking. Time will be taken to patiently and gently explain steps and concepts.
I will go through examples of varying difficulty and focus on two things: understanding of the problem and the correct steps. We can also look at past paper questions if the student is preparing for a specific exam and monitor their progress from session to session. I always encourage the student to ask any questions they have at any time so that they feel comfortable.
The structure of my lessons depends on each student's needs and how they best learn. For example, we can go through guided worksheets for some or a more visual way of learning with software such as MicroSoft Powerpoint.
Webcams are not mandatory, so the usage of one is up to the person I am tutoring. I will use Zoom and a virtual whiteboard. My hours are very flexible, so do get in touch if you are interested!
