About Bill

I have a Ph.D. in communication from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Currently, I am a professor at Michigan State University where I teach strategic communication. As part of my doctoral studies I spent a considerable time learning advanced statistical methods, which I use in my academic research. My undergraduate degree is in philosophy with a minor in mathematics from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Teaching is my second career. For more than a quarter century I made my living as a strategic communication professional and writer.

About the lesson

I see myself as a learning coach. I work with my students to understand their goals and needs. Then we work together to come up with a plan to reach those goals. Whether you want to work for NASA or just pass Algebra 2, I can help.

My lessons are for high school or early college students.

What sets me apart is I work hard to understand the strengths and challenges of each student. Everyone learns at different speeds and in diverse ways. I will tailor a learning plan that plays to those strengths while attacking their challenges head on.

In our first meeting we will walk through a thorough assessment based on the subject matter knowledge and study skills. From that assessment we will set up an individualized learning plan, complete with measurable objectives to gauge how we are doing.

Details

The first 30 minutes is at no charge or obligation. This is a get-to-know-you session to see if we are a good fit for each other. I charge $45 an hour, but that rate is discounted if you purchase a 5- or 10-hour block of lessons. I charge an additional $15 per-lesson travel fee (within 15 miles of Brighton, MI) if you would like an in-person lesson in your home. Otherwise, I hold sessions at the Brighton Area Library or online.
