About Jonathan

I graduated University of Florida with a Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics. My minor was in secondary education (grades 6 - 12). I taught for exactly 25 years, up until this past school year. Of my 25 years of teaching math at the middle school and high school level, I also headed the math department for 23 of those 25 years.

I know how to keep students engaged, I empower them by letting them do most of the work, I give subtle hints in order to keep them using their logic/reasoning skills. By the time they reach a final solution, they realize that this recent "impossible" problem was actually just solved. Those are the moments that I enjoy.

I take this responsibility very seriously, which is why I make sure that students feel safe and comfortable, being able to be themselves. I want them to feel safe and comfortable enough to take risks, learn from mistakes, and most importantly, to realize that the so-called "mistakes" are actually coming from a very intelligent place, while also narrowing down what does not work and coming up with adjustments to finally reach solutions. It is all part of the process and I promise to make it engaging, exciting, and fun. Thank you for the potential trust, which I hold sacred.

About the lesson

I adjust to student's abilities. I build trust, create steps with small successes. I combine strategies and adjust to whatever skills works best for each individual student. I build trust and confidence, making students feel at ease, while also being comfortable taking risks and making mistakes. I can work with students at all levels of ability/confidence. I can always extend lessons, make them more challenging, and teach lots of tricks/shortcuts.

My typical lesson plan starts with the most current curriculum. I make sure that they are caught up with the notes, classwork, and homework in order to stay current. I find that students start to gain momentum and confidence once they see progress and results. Next, I work backwards to expose any gaps that need to be filled in. I create my own problems and have a lot of experience working with all types of students.

Finally, I can also move students ahead in their curriculum. I can go ahead of the class with your child so that the first time that it is taught in class, it will not seem so new. I can always help with homework, review for assessments, etc. Whatever is needed, I have done this for a long time.

I make my sessions fun, engaging, and successful. Most students feel very comfortable, more confident, and more successful even after the first session. I would love the opportunity to make a significant difference in your child's mathematical development.
