About Esme

Hello! I am a PhD student in math, located at the University of Toronto. Previously, I studied at Queen's, where I studied in the Concurrent Education program, majoring in math and minoring in philosophy.

During the Con-Ed program at Queen's, I completed several teaching development courses and student teacher placements in elementary, middle, and high schools. After continuing on to graduate studies, I became a teaching assistant at Queen's and now at U of T, where I have taught tutorials and worked with students in numerous courses. Among these courses are differential and integral calculus, linear algebra, number theory, group theory, and concepts in abstract math. I have also worked as a head TA, aiding in training new TAs for our first-year calculus courses.

Directly related to tutoring, I began tutoring many years ago in high school through my school's peer tutoring and homework club. At Queen's, I worked in the Math Help Centre for three years, and also tutored privately on occasion. Similarly, I have been an active staff member at U of T's Math Learning Centre for several years. This fast-paced environment taught me to connect with students, evaluate their level of understanding, and adapt to their specific needs all in a matter of minutes.

Two years ago, I began private tutoring again, gaining more experience with school-aged students ranging from grade 5 to grade 12, and enjoying the experience immensely.

When working with students, I use an "Ask, Don't Tell" approach. This means that instead of giving direct answers to student questions, I seek to break down the problem and lead the student through it by asking THEM guiding questions. Through this, I strive to strengthen students' mathematical thinking skills, creativity, and curiosity. This method also encourages active engagement and practice rather than passive listening.

Of course, this isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. I always tailor this approach to the student in front of me to match their specific needs and personality. There are also instances where direct instruction is more appropriate, and I don't shy away from that when needed.

With my experience and approach, I am excited to work with students with a variety of different backgrounds and objectives. Maybe your child or teen is struggling due to fear, inconsistency, or just simply not knowing the best way to study. Maybe math is going well, but you are looking for extra practice, accountability, or mentoring to bring your child's abilities to the next level. Or maybe your child already likes (or LOVES) math and your goal is fun, personalized enrichment that will build deep mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills!

In any of the above cases, please don't hesitate to reach out! I'd love to hear what your specific goals and needs are. If desired, we can arrange a free Zoom consultation to discuss in more detail.

Hope to hear from you soon!
