About Dane
My teaching started eight years ago, when I started explaining computer issues over the phone to 80 year old people with absolutely no technical understanding. It can be very difficult explaining something you know to someone who knows nothing about it, but in those eight years I have learned a lot about communication skills: how to listen, demonstrate, adapt techniques, and come up with new methods of reaching different people. I do that every day as a math teacher, conveying information that comes easy to some, and much more difficult to many. After 4 years of teaching and hundreds of graduated students, I believe I have a strong understanding of how to teach math effectively, but of course there is always room for growth!

I come from a long line of people who are "good at math." But you don't have to have any inherent mathematical skill to learn math, and to enjoy it.
I learned most about math at Northwestern University, where I earned a B.A. in Mathematics and M.S. in Computer Science. Everything from advanced calculus to basic geometry to theoretical linear and abstract algebra.
I teach conceptually. If you don't understand what you're doing, then what's the point in learning it at all? If you understand the concepts, then formulas and processes will seem natural and memorization unnecessary. I teach concepts using analogies, manipulatives, and historical background. After that, it's practice, practice, practice! The most important thing is to learn to visualize and apply math mentally, so I push those skills. Once you have mastered the concepts and the art of visualization, I hope math will be so much more fun and easy!
