I believe as a Mathematical statistician and a teacher it is my responsibility to challenge and support my students, in pursuit of three learning goals: (1) confront misconceptions about crucial mathematical ideas; (2) learn basic mathematical concepts; (3) cultivate an interest in statistical/mathematical science and an understanding of how they are relevant in science and beyond. I want my students to leave my classroom with basic mathematical skills that enable them to engage these ideas, making well-considered choices. How do I do this?I start with a very simple idea such as basic statistical terminologies. I gather students’ initial ideas about why they need knowledge of statistics to succeed in their research findings. I then challenge them to discuss the questions in pairs and explain their answers to one another. A second poll of answers demonstrates how students’ ideas have changed, and allows me to correct misconceptions and assess their understanding of basic mathematical concepts. The crucial final stage in this discussion is that of developing real practical problems to test their ideas. This is the crux of how statistical science is done. I have two benchmarks for determining that my objectives for students learning are met:that students are able to convey statistical concepts in everyday language; and that students are able to use basic knowledge and statistical skills as building blocks to tackle more complex mathematical problems. Often this requires that I use more unusual means of evaluation to determine whether these learning objectives are met.
