About Felipe

I had always excelled in math since I was a child. However, I didn't develop a passion for it until I was in high school. My passion for mathematics education developed when I met my now wife. I tutored her in math when we were both in high school and I was able to get her to ace exams completely on her own. Since then I have gone on to study math at the undergraduate, graduate and now doctoral level, but my passion remains the same: help students achieve success in math and enjoy it in the process.

About the lesson

I teach mathematics at a variety of levels (from elementary to graduate level mathematics). The goal is to get students engaged in their math and their learning. My current favorite teaching technique is based on approachability and understanding. I encourage students to open up about their goals and difficulties and I use their strengths to help overcome their weaknesses. I also prefer to have the conversations be fluid and approachable. I ensure students are comfortable opening up and don't feel judged when doing so. A typical lesson consists of a brief introduction to help with approachability and a brief assessment of goals, skills and difficulties. From there, I discuss an academic plan with the student and we start putting the plan to practice by either providing a short lecture or working through problems together. That is followed by the student attempting problems on their own and a review of the content and the understanding.
