About Elana
With over 20 years of experience as a mathematics professor, I bring a level of expertise. I currently serve as the Mathematics Department Chair and the Program Director for the Mathematics Education Master's program at my university. My academic journey began with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Mathematics from Binghamton University, followed by a Doctorate in Mathematics Education from Columbia University.

My teaching is centered on building deep understanding rather than memorization. I use a student-centered approach inspired by active learning and problem-solving, where students engage with concepts through carefully designed tasks rather than passive listening. I incorporate questioning strategies, real-world connections, and multiple representations (visual, algebraic, numerical) to help students make sense of mathematics. I also emphasize a growth mindset—helping students build confidence and persistence when facing challenging problems.
