About Al
I am a second-year (out of three) at Oregon State University. I completed the first year-and-a-term of Biological engineering before switching to mathematics in order to pursue STEM education at a lower cost. In the past, I have been a mentor of a high-school robotics team, camp counselor, an high-school assistant for AP Chemistry. I am currently a teaching assistant for Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering 101. This term, I am a peer-mentor for the honors college. I conduct undergraduate research in computational and experimental chemical engineering under an OSU professor. I have also led a few workshops to help undergraduate engineers develop their leadership skills.

As an aspiring high school teacher, I am aiming to help current high school or early-undergraduate students with mathematics or chemistry. I only ask that students come to lessons ready to think and explore, equipped to lots of questions! Whether math/chemistry is something you dread or your favorite subject, I'm happy to work with you!
In my lessons, I present students with challenging new problems which are designed to nurture critical thinking and help them discover interesting applications if their work. For example, did you know the world is secretly ruled by triangles? I go beyond rote memorization. After all, anyone can perform a google search these days. If I have multiple students, I have them work in groups. Beyond learning better from each other's wisdom, this serves as good practice for their future careers. The result of all this is a deep and intuitive understanding of the subject which goes beyond what's on the test, while reducing the stress and work with which we are all familiar.
