About Edison

Hello! My name is Edison, and I'm starting my second year at the University of Waterloo this fall, where I am majoring in Mathematics/CPA. My passion for mathematics began early in my schooling and has grown into both a field of study and a personal passion. I find joy in solving complex problems and am thrilled by the clarity and elegance that math brings to understanding the world.

At the University, I've not only deepened my knowledge of advanced mathematical concepts but also honed my skills in analytical thinking and problem-solving. These skills have enabled me to help my peers understand challenging material, sparking my interest in tutoring.

My approach to teaching math is grounded in patience and understanding that everyone has a unique learning pace and style. I strive to make math accessible and enjoyable by breaking down complex concepts into understandable parts and using real-world examples. I believe in building a strong foundational understanding that allows students to feel confident and self-reliant in their abilities.

I utilize a problem-solving approach that encourages critical thinking and real-world application of concepts.

I do (Modeling)
Every new concept begins with 'I do', where I take the lead. My role is to introduce the math problem and walk through the solution process step-by-step. This phase is crucial for setting a strong foundation.

Details:

Demonstrate Techniques: I will demonstrate problem-solving techniques and explain the rationale behind each step, ensuring that the concepts are clear and accessible.

We do (Guided Practice)
Introduction:
After modeling the problem-solving process, we move into the 'We do' phase. This is where I collaborate with the student, guiding them through similar problems.

Details:

Interactive Participation: Students will actively participate, applying what they observed during 'I do'. This is a collaborative effort, and I provide guidance, ensuring they are on the right track.

Immediate Feedback: As we work through problems together, I provide instant feedback and correction. This immediate reinforcement helps solidify understanding and adjusts techniques in real-time.

You do (Independent Practice)
Introduction:
The final phase is 'You do', where the student applies the concepts independently. This phase tests and reinforces the student’s understanding and ability to handle problems on their own.

Details:

Practice Problems: Students will work on a set of problems independently, applying the methods and techniques we've practiced.

Building Confidence and Mastery: This stage is essential for building confidence. It allows students to experience handling problems by themselves, which is crucial for their academic independence and growth.

Supportive Feedback: After the independent practice, I review their work, provide feedback, and discuss any difficulties they encountered. This ensures they feel supported and understand how to improve.
