About Lillian
I am a senior Mathematics students at Hobart and William Smith colleges with a 4.1 GPA. I have experience tutoring math 1-1 and in small groups for pre-algebra through calculus and teaching as a long and short term sub in elementary schools. Additionally, I have shadowed and collaborated with highschool math teachers on lesson plans, teaching strategies and material. Most importantly, I have experienced feeling lost and confused about math and have developed strategies to succeed.

All students who eventually master a topic start unsure and lost, and we all come across challenges and questions that we can't wrap our heads around at first. One skill of a great student is learning to identify these questions and ask them - either to a teacher, the internet, or a textbook. While my focus will be on helping you to gain mathematical reasoning and communication skills, each lesson will include an emphasis on self reflection, confidence building, and eventually, independent learning techniques.
These skills will help you to thrive, not just with the material you are focusing on, but also in future mathematics classes.
As a 4th year math major, I am highly skilled in mathematical reasoning and problem solving but one of my mantras for students is "I am not always right." I encourage students to question my own thinking and reasons and am unashamed to admit when I have made a mistake or forgotten some material. By encouraging the students to question not just their own work, but the work of others (who may even be more experienced and/or knoweldgeble) they learn to be active learners, invested in the material. I find that this fosters a collaborative-like learning environment that encourages confidence development and independent thinking.
I am happy to help you work through problem sets assigned by another instructor, or I can work with you to create a learning plan of our own based on your goals.
