About Kate

I have experience working with all kinds of students, but especially enjoy working with talented middle and grade schoolers. These are the students who are not afraid to ask questions, and who are most curious about how things work.
I worked with a six year old student who I introduced to interlocking wooden puzzles as well as the 2x2 Rubik's cube. He was very young, boisterous, and extremely talented, so I had my hands full keeping his attention and interest. I learned a lot from him about how to teach kids.
Another student was a ten year old girl in seventh grade, who (I think) was frustrated for lack of being challenged in her math class. She enjoyed building origami pieces, and I was able to use this (Japanese art form) as a tool to introduce various geometric concepts. We ended up learning about unit conversions, Pythagorean theorem, constructions with ruler and compass, the unit circle, ... just about everything short of pre-Calculus.
I am honored when my students trust me.
In my spare time, I study the geometry of constructible numbers and various topological spaces, I work out in my garden. (Hedera Helix is a bane.) I enjoy walking with my floofy dog, and reading great books.

Multi-variable Calculus seems intimidating at first, but it's really not difficult. This class depends on the accumulated wealth of algebra, geometry, and analysis of functions. I think the most important part of this class is gaining a clear understanding of the concepts, and following up with practice, practice, practice, ... and more practice. It can be done!!

syllabus: Same as GA Tech Math 2551.
Math 2551 is an introduction to multivariable calculus. Topics include:
• Vectors and the geometry of space, vector calculus, parametric curves and motion
• Functions of several variables, visualization and partial differentiation, gradients, linear approximation, tangent
planes, differentials, optimization, Lagrange multipliers
• Double and triple integrals, geometric and spatial applications, change of variables
• Vector analysis including the theorems of Green, Gauss, and Stokes

I like to teach from standard math textbooks. For Calculus, I am familiar with Pugh, Folland, Boas, Rudin, Anton. For Abstract Algebra, I am familiar with Artin, Dummit and Foote. Differential Equations I learned from Boyce and Diprima and have taught from current editions of this textbook. Linear Algebra I am familiar with Axler, and Lang.
I encourage my students to stop me whenever they don't understand, or are confused by a concept. Listening to students is important. Most difficulties arise from anxiety rather than a lack of ablility.
