About Amanda

I originally trained as a physicist (to PhD level), then a project manager, with a specialism in atmospheric science and wide interest in all areas of science and education. After 5 years scientific research and 15 years modernising the civil service, I began taking science and maths workshops into local primary schools, and then moved into tutoring secondary school students. Note: I went up to Oxford University from a solidly working class background as a ‘first generation’ student. My proven ability to break the mould and forge new and challenging paths, when added to my academic depth, may provide additional inspiration, motivation and belief for some students.

*** STOP PRESS - I am currently fully booked until the summer 2023 public examinations. *** 'Understand the topic, be able to answer the questions.' First and foremost, I aim for my students at all levels to really understand and be able to conceptualise the topic at hand. Where students have not understood at school/college during class, I use a range of techniques to assist understanding, including analogy, visualisation, derivation and linking across topics. I have a track record of working through explanations that are accessible to all, with ‘points to ponder’ to stretch the more gifted. Once we have achieved understanding, the next step is applying it to interpret and solve problems. This can be done in different ways, and exam tips and techniques also come up here. For example, I can provide questions that the student and I will work through together in the tutorial, or the student may send through 2-3 questions from school/college that they have found difficult and we can work through those instead. Occasionally, and only if the student wishes, I may set a small amount of homework to help consolidate the week’s learning. I mainly tutor up to GCSE, but also take on a limited number of A-Level and KS3 science and maths students. At all levels, my approach is friendly, energetic, down to earth, confident and approachable. I adapt to each student’s individual needs, really care about my students, and hope to enthuse them with my genuine love of science and maths! This approach has proven successful with a wide range of students – exam results typically increased by 1-2 grades in recent mocks and GCSEs, with one student going up by six grades from level 0 to 6! Currently, I am tutoring online or face-to-face at my home address, keeping up-to-date with any ‘COVID secure’ guidelines. I am based in NW Hampshire between Andover and Winchester.

Details

My rates are higher for A-level than GCSE/KS3, and all rates are likely to increase during 2023. The quoted rate is an indicative midpoint value, as I have not yet set my rates for summer 2023, when I next expect to have availability.
