I'm a big believer that learning should be fun as well as informative so I like to incorporate games, quizzes and past paper questions into my session plans. A typical lesson would last 1 hour 30 and look like this:
eg) This session is about fractions
+10 mins - Last session recap - what did we learn last week?
+15 mins - Mindmap - what do we know about fractions?
+20 mins - Read - this is how to add/subtract/multiply/divide
fractions etc.
+25 mins - Practice - let's work through some problems, first
together and then independently
+10 mins - Games - kahoot/quiz/bitesize game etc
+10 mins - Reflection - what did we learn today? what will
we take away from this session? set any further tasks
In my experience as a volunteer tutor with CoachBright, my students thrived with the varied styles of learning, and left sessions feeling empowered to approach learning on their own confidently.
With Coachbright, I primarily focused on teaching Y7-9 pupils however I also helped tutor my younger sisters and brother for their GCSEs.
