My strategy is to make the basics of every concept strong so that students can think about how to deal with any question. I make sure the basics of the concept are clear to the student so that they can solve any type of question, because when basics are clear, only then can a student think about how to deal with questions, and yes, that encourages students to solve many problems from different books.
