About Andrew
BSc (Honours) in Pure Mathematics and a PGCE from a top 10 UK University. I had nearly 20 five-star reviews from another tutoring website which has now closed.
I taught Maths (11-18) in a comprehensive school during the 1980s and was also head of IT at that school. I started private tuition at that time. My pupils have always exceeded expectations, with numerous examples of pupils jumping many grades against school predictions.
I left to work in finance IT for 30 years and took up private tuition again in 2020 when I retired.
I have a positive "can do" attitude which I encourage in my pupils. I am friendly and make lessons fun, sometimes briefly discussing other related topics with them to demonstrate the interconnectedness of several academic disciplines. I also discuss pupils' hobbies and interests and use humour to build a positive and trusting relationship.
I am reliable and always turn up on time for lessons. I believe that part of my role is to demonstrate how I prioritise their education and future successes through my own behaviour towards them. Similarly, I set homework and take that seriously too.
I am married with two wonderful adult daughters, both of whom I tutored during their school (and university) years. My hobbies are:
- Reading (typically novels but also some non-fiction);
- Gardening (I grow all our own vegetables which I then freeze for use during winter);
- Music. I have a wide taste including classical; jazz; blues and new wave.

I am passionate about Maths and love encouraging others to share my love of the subject. I am positive, friendly, kind, caring and non-judgemental.
I believe that explaining "how" to solve problems is not enough. I teach my pupils "why" different approaches work and bring seemingly diverse topics together to explain how they are related.
As pupils approach examinations I start working on past papers with them from around January. By the time pupils sit the exams in May they will be extremely familiar with the style and content of the papers. I also cover examination technique during this period.
Lessons are one hour long and can take place online or face-to-face.
I have previously taught pupils all over the world online in preparation for numerous different examination boards. Most of my local teaching has been for either the WJEC examination or the iGCSE which is taught at Monmouth's private schools.

Andy has helped three of of my four children so far with their maths GCSE revision. It was clear from the first experience with my eldest son that Andy has a knack for making maths clear and interesting. He knows the GCSE spec very well but also loves the subject which really helps to develop enthusiasm as well as capability in the student. One of my daughters is hoping to do maths A level so I am really pleased that she can go to Andy with any concerns she has. I don't think we have begun to use the maths knowledge that he has at his fingertips! I highly recommend him as a tutor.
I can’t recommend Andy enough!
He has been such a fantastic tutor for our homeschooled Son, taking him from feeling anxious about Math/ all school work to being ready to take his GCSE higher Math a year early!
Andy has endless patience and is able to balance this with keeping at a pace that means our son has reached max potential.
I would, and do, recommend Andy to everyone!
I know Andrew as my daughter’s maths tutor, and he has been excellent from the very beginning. He has worked with her in a patient, supportive, and encouraging way, helping to build both her mathematical understanding and her confidence.
What I appreciate most about Andrew’s teaching methods is his ability to explain difficult concepts clearly and calmly, while tailoring his approach to suit my daughter’s learning style. He creates a relaxed environment where she feels comfortable asking questions, and lessons are always structured, engaging, and productive. We have seen a noticeable improvement in both her confidence and her progress at school since working with him.
One thing that has particularly stood out is how dedicated Andrew has been in making sure my daughter genuinely understands the topics rather than simply memorising answers. After a few sessions on areas she had previously struggled with, she came away feeling much more positive and capable, which was fantastic to see as a parent.
I would highly recommend Andrew to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, professional, and approachable maths tutor.Andy has been absolutely excellent providing additional A-Level Maths tutoring to a young person I support.
Andy has been able to provide a consistent weekly session in which is delivered in a fun and easy to understand way.
This has helped to improve both my young persons knowledge and confidence.
Andy is AMAZING!!Andrew is a very passionate online teacher who helped our son & daughter with their GCSE exams. With his deep knowledge, patience and empathy Andrew has the rare ability to trigger our children’s interest in maths. Andrew is always reliable and flexible as well as fantastic person and teacher. We are very happy that we found him and looking forward to meeting him in person one day.
Andrew is one of the most amazing teachers I have ever met. Every lesson is well planned and organized, and all content is delivered clearly and completely. We are based in China, and the boys' English level is a bit weak. Andrew is very patient with them and uses very effective methods to make them understand the concepts and engage them a lot in class, which helps them make great progress in school term exams. I would recommend Andrew to other parents.
Andrew is a great Maths tutor. My son needed a boost with his GCSE Maths and Andrew was brilliant. He listened to what my son needed and tailored his approach to meet his needs.
We’ve been incredibly pleased with the support Andy has given our son throughout his GCSE Maths preparation. He has gone from being a C-grade student to now being predicted an A, which is a testament to Andy’s teaching ability and dedication.
Our son was initially quite reluctant about having a maths tutor, but Andy quickly managed to put him at ease and engage him. Maths has now become one of his favourite and strongest subjects, thanks in large part to Andy’s ability to help him truly understand the material and apply his knowledge confidently
We would highly recommend Andy to anyone looking for a knowledgeable and effective maths tutor.Andy is an excellent Maths Tutor, he is incredibly patient, and has helped both my boys achieve the best they can, through dedicated explanation and encouragement. Their confidence has grown and their teachers have noted a great improvement. They are about to sit their exams with a lot more confidence. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Andy.
I am so pleased that we heard of Andy! He has tutored both our daughters, who are home educated, through their Maths GCSE. Our eldest achieved an A and we’re confident that our other daughter will do well this summer. Our daughters have hugely appreciated Andy’s enthusiasm for Maths and the way he draws them into the world of maths. They have both found the lessons interesting and have been helped by Andy’s clear and memorable explanations. Thank you Andy - you’ve been amazing!
Andy has been tutoring my twin boys in their Maths GCSE’s since September. They have both moved from sitting the foundation paper to the intermediate and are going into their exams this week with so much more confidence. Andy is patient and is able to explain methods by breaking things down making it easier for them to understand. I would not hesitate in recommending Andy. He has been nothing short of fabulous! Helen (Mum of Rhys and Josh).
Andy was a fantastic tutor for our 3 children - patient and enthusiastic and a lovely chap. The kids actually looked forward to their maths sessions and got good GCSE results. Miracle worker really. We miss him now they're through.
Would strongly recommend.View more recommendations
