About James
Hi I'm James!
I am very passionate about maths, and maths education in particular. I am a fully qualified secondary school maths teacher and I have both a BSc and a PhD in Mathematics.
I have developed my teaching ability and style over several years in education; in schools, in private lessons and at university. I appreciate that many students do not have confidence in their ability in maths, but I have confidence in my ability to help address this! I am dedicated to making my lessons enjoyable, as well as effective.

I have a first class Maths with Engineering degree and a PGCE in secondary school mathematics. I have taught maths at East Leake Academy and at Toot Hill School. I have a PhD in Mathematical Medicine and Biology and I am currently teaching maths at the University of Nottingham. I have given private lessons to GCSE and A-level students in the past (prior to joining Superprof).
I am happy and able to teach any maths, from year 7 up to A-level Further Maths. I like to focus on helping students develop their problem solving and analytical thinking skills, which will help with academic performance as well as employability. I help students figure things out themselves and build self-confidence using a guided discovery approach.
I currently teach maths to Civil Engineering, Chemical/Environmental Engineering and Business/Accounting students at the University of Nottingham. I can therefore provide information and advice to students who are considering going to university to study a subject that involves a lot of maths.
Regarding lesson length, I am fairly flexible. I would say no less than 1 hour and no more than 2 hours in one go. I appreciate that family life is busy, so I am happy to accommodate where possible!
I am happy for lessons to take place at your home, at my home, or online. Lessons are £25 (+ £5 travel cost if lessons take place at your house). I request that you give me at least 24 hours notice of the topics to be covered, so that I can prepare beforehand to make my lesson as effective as possible.
