About Max
I'm a first-year PhD student at King's College London studying pure maths. I also completed my master's at Warwick University in maths, obtaining an overall average of 90% and graduating within the top 5 students of my cohort.
Despite all this, maths actually wasn't my strongest subject when I started school. I was lucky to have a few mentors who taught me maths in a way that didn't focus on exams or exam technique at first. They explained the intuitive ideas behind the topics we were learning before we moved on to learning how to answer exam questions.
I want to convey that same idea to any student I work with. I think it's important to know that answering exam questions well doesn't necessarily mean you understand that subject, and conversely understanding a subject doesn't necessarily mean you will do well in exams. It's also worth remembering that many teachers only focus on the exam technique aspect, sometimes at the expense of any understanding.
Any student I have will be taught both of these skills in conjunction and this has been my methodology throughout my tutoring experience. It leads to more confidence overall and in answering exam questions as students then have the subject knowledge and the exam technique necessary to be applied to any situation.
I have tutored students at GCSE and A-Level (both in person and online) and I was also responsible for teaching ten undergraduate students in my final year at university. This involved supplementing the teaching for their core modules as well as marking and giving feedback on their assignments.
If you'd be interested in meeting me to ask any questions about me or my teaching style please feel free to get in touch!

I think it's important to remember that understanding a subject and doing well in exams (i.e. exam technique) can be different skills. My emphasis will be on separating the two and teaching both for a deeper understanding and more confidence.
During the first session I would find out the areas you would most like to work on. I would ask you where you feel like you need that help, and I would also get you to work through some past paper questions aloud so that I could get a sense of where you are at.
Often in school we get bogged down in the formalities of maths. In later sessions I would try to give an intuitive explanation for the topics we are covering so that you can have a better understanding of what's going on. After the intuition has been explained it's then worth going over how teachers and examiners want you to answer exam questions. We would go through a couple of questions together so I could show you what they look for (and so I could give you any tips and tricks I've picked up over the years) and I would then get you to try and answer a couple more on your own, thinking aloud so I can see how your mind is working.
Finally, I believe in setting small, clear, and manageable goals that you want to achieve. I would provide support for both the student and parents in order to facilitate achieving these goals.
