About Benedict

Having supported GCSE pupils in the classroom, I have over 6 years' experience tutoring 1-1, with a wealth of mathematical experience behind me. Currently I am doing a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Warwick. Experience tutoring 11+, KS2, KS3, GCSE/NAT5, Highers, A-levels, MAT, TMUA, STEP, undergraduate level and UKMT. Over 1000 hours taught! Qualifications: PhD Mathematics: 2024-2027 MSc Mathematics: Distinction BSc Mathematics: 1st with Honours A-levels: Maths A*, Further Maths A*, Economics A*, Physics A 10 GCSEs: 9 in mathematics

About the lesson

Lesson Plan: We will work together to achieve the highest grade you desire, through the use of challenging questions and recapping. Tutor all ages and abilities, just send me a message. As most teaching will be online, we’ll utilise an online whiteboard to simultaneously work on the problems. Basic lesson/weekly structure: - Cover any issues with the content of the week’s topic/questions from the student - Actively solving relevant problems and exam questions together targeting weaker areas Independent Work: - Optional practice questions each week - Weekly review for parents on progress available upon request

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Having always enjoyed maths, I decided to try make maths more engaging for other pupils. Often classroom teaching can be insufficient to deal with the individual problems face, tuition helps to deal with these in fun ways.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Maths has endless topics and subtopics, all of which provide hard-problems to be solved. The best questions from students come from the questions which require the most-problem solving. This is a skill I like to help to teach.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My high-school maths teacher was one of the best - I often use methods of her teaching in my own learning and teaching. Most prominent was looking for the reasons behind the methods, to gain a deeper understanding.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Communication is key. Students can often not understand problems the first way you explain, so thinking of another creative solution is invaluable.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
My fondest memories of maths are working with my peers through problems. I try to recreate this sort of atmosphere when tutoring, not just offering the solutions but suggesting ideas to one-another to come to a solution.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
The hardest part was always doing the topics I found least interesting. Sometimes having a teacher who isn't engaging makes these topics ever harder to learn.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
My passion lies in problem-solving, whether its chess or maths problems. I find they provide a great sense of achievement when completed.
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?
Working hard to help my students as much as possible. I'm often accessible by email for sporadic exam questions before an exam, and I'm only satisfied when my students are.
