About Robert

I am a College graduate with a passion for teaching. I find teaching others to be the best method of maintaining my knowledge and helping others who struggle with what I can help with.

I was the first year to sit the new spec for Maths GCSE and achieved a grade 9 in it and I am a very logical thinker. Moreover, I have taught people before and they often say I have a way of explaining that teachers never do, be it less formal or just laid out in a way that is easy to grasp.

I am going to be studying Computer Science and Electronics at the University of Bristol and have done Computer Science at both GCSE and A-Level. I am familiar with Java and Python (Although I have barely touched Python since GCSE). I can help with how to program in these languages as well as explain theoretical concepts in computer science.

About the lesson

My method of teaching is to listen to the students needs and go from there, often I will prepare questions that are harder or involve a bit more thought so that after we have covered what the student is finding difficult, the student gets solid practice. This is very important as the best way to do well in academic subjects is to be very involved, even if you don't understand the question, and if they don't that's where I can come in and offer some hints so that the student can figure it out themselves so that they remember better for next time as opposed to just giving them the answer.

As I have mentioned before the best way to study and revise is through practice and to teach this I implement two methods that are known to be the most time efficient and have the greatest impact. These two methods are: Active recall and Spaced repetition. What they entail is that the student has to gather the information required for the question from their head and try to sprall out an answer and then review it. This helps with learning and with patterns which often occur at GCSE and A-Level Maths. Spaced repetition is used so that the student doesn't simply forget what they have just learned over the next few days. Studies show that people will forget 90% of what they had learned 2 days ago if they do not go over it again, by implementing bits of questions together I can cover a large amount of topics in a question leading to the student having to keep engaging in practicing the topics they struggle with.

I teach over Discord which is a communication platform. On here I can stream my screen to the student's internet enabled device where I can explain concepts verbally and set out questions on my screen for the student to attempt at home. The application is completely free of charge. The student can send pictures of problems they struggled with to me and I can go over them on-screen.
