About Akshay

I am a part-qualified actuary with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and 8 years of professional experience in financial services, having worked as a Manager at Ageas Federal Life Insurance and PNB MetLife India Insurance in Mumbai. I am originally from India and am currently based in Dublin 18, where I am completing an MSc Finance at Technological University Dublin.

Math has been central to everything I have done professionally. From statistical modeling and probability to financial mathematics and quantitative analysis. I have passed 10 of 13 IFoA professional actuarial exams, which cover some of the most rigorous applied mathematics examined at postgraduate level anywhere.

Outside of work and studies, I have a genuine interest in teaching and explaining things clearly. I previously volunteered with Umang, working with children with special needs, which gave me experience adapting my communication style to suit different learning needs and paces.

I tutor Math, Statistics, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Arithmetic at secondary school and undergraduate level. Whether you are working towards the Leaving Cert, preparing for a college exam, or simply want to build stronger foundations in math, I am happy to help.

About the lesson

My approach starts with understanding where the student is struggling before jumping into explanations. Everyone gets stuck at a different point, and the same concept can click differently for different people, so I try to identify the specific gap first rather than going through everything from the beginning.

Once I know where the difficulty is, I work through the concept step by step, using real examples wherever possible. I find that math makes much more sense when you can see why something works, not just how to do it. A formula is easy to forget but the logic behind it stays with you.

I am patient by nature and I do not move on until the student is genuinely comfortable with what we have covered. If one explanation is not landing, I try a different angle. Sometimes a visual, sometimes a worked example, sometimes just slowing down and breaking the steps into smaller pieces.

I also have a professional background where I have used math daily for 8 years in a real working environment — probability, statistics, financial mathematics, quantitative modeling. This means I can often show students where the concepts they are learning actually get used in the real world, which I find helps with motivation and makes abstract topics feel more relevant.

Outside of sessions I am happy to point students towards practice problems or resources that suit their level and exam format, whether that is Leaving Cert, Junior Cert, or university level.
