About Tim
In the first year of my A-levels, I found myself consistently getting E grades in Maths and Physics. Despite this, due to better study routines, and a better understanding of the 'why' behind these subjects, I achieved an A* grade in both subjects in my final year. This experience allowed me to develop empathy for a student that is far behind in their classes, and recognise that anyone can end up in that circumstance. Most importantly however, deeply positive change can occur once the right habits and learning environment are established. This is not a mystical process, but simply the result of disciplined work, applied in the most efficient way. Once this process of improved learning starts, it feeds back into itself, as self-confidence grows and further fuels motivation. I aspire to be a professor of Mathematics as my future career, and I hope to help as many students as possible achieve their potential in Maths and Physics.

I'm available on any day of the week (given enough notice) and can meet for lessons in any place in Edinburgh. I am a third-year Mathematics student at the University of Edinburgh, and completed my A-Levels at Gordonstoun School, achieving an A* grade in both Maths and Physics. I am actively involved in Maths Outreach at university, and also volunteer as part of the science mentor programme at CastleBrae. My lesson times and length can be flexible to fit the student's needs, and include; (1) a discussion of the 'why' behind learning a particular topic, (2) a big-picture overview of the topic to build intuition and motivate the discussion, (3) simple worked examples to make abstract ideas more concrete, (4) working through exam questions in a detailed and deliberate way and, (5) practical advice on exam technique and revision strategies.
