About Ian
My interest in mathematics education grew from observing how many capable students struggle due to gaps in conceptual understanding. I earned an M.Sc in Applied Mathematics Education, where I focused on instructional design and learner-centred teaching strategies. Over 9 years, I have worked with students across elementary school maths, middle school maths, geometry, algebra, and SAT maths, helping them build confidence and clarity. I teach with patience, adaptability, and empathy. I adjust explanations to suit each student’s learning style, using visual tools, step-by-step breakdowns, and real-life examples. Many students arrive feeling uncertain, but through structured guidance they develop independence and confidence. Supporting this transformation is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. Outside teaching, I design custom practice materials, explore problem-solving research, and study innovative maths education methods. These efforts help me continuously refine my approach. Teaching mathematics allows me to empower students with lifelong reasoning skills and confidence.

Mathematics becomes clearer and more engaging when students are guided to understand relationships between concepts rather than memorising isolated procedures. In my lessons, I teach elementary school maths, middle school maths, geometry, algebra, and SAT maths using structured explanations that build understanding step by step. I focus on helping students see patterns, develop logical reasoning, and gain confidence through consistent practice and thoughtful discussion. Each lesson progresses at a pace that supports comprehension and reduces anxiety. Lesson plans are adapted to the learner’s level and goals. Beginners strengthen number sense, arithmetic accuracy, and early problem-solving skills. Intermediate learners deepen understanding of algebraic expressions, geometry concepts, ratios, and multi-step reasoning. Advanced students focus on SAT maths strategies, efficiency, accuracy, and higher-level algebra and geometry challenges. Guided practice and reflective problem-solving are central to every session. Maths lessons also support cognitive growth beyond academics. Students develop patience, focus, and structured thinking habits that help them approach challenges calmly. As confidence grows in algebra and geometry, learners begin to trust their reasoning abilities. My goal is to help students feel capable, supported, and empowered through mathematics.
