About Steven
Originally from Australia and now based in West London, I bring a broad range of life experience and a genuine passion for history, heritage, and storytelling to my tutoring. Before retraining in history, I worked in the travel and tourism industry with government tourism organisations and leading tour groups, which gave me strong communication, presentation, and people skills and helped me connect others with cultures, places, and historical narratives from around the world.
I grew up near Sydney, but spent my early adult life living in the Aussie Outback before getting a job in London. My own journey into studying history was personal. Inspired by my Australian grandfather’s experiences as a prisoner of war during the Second World War, I undertook a pilgrimage across Europe following parts of his wartime story and turned it into my final dissertation for my degree. That experience strengthened my interest in public history and the ways personal stories connect to larger historical events.
After gaining British citizenship, I decided to return to university and begin a new chapter by studying for a BA in History at Roehampton University. I will also begin an MA in Public History and Heritage at Birkbeck, University of London, in October, as I am committed to making history accessible, engaging, and meaningful for wider audiences from all backgrounds.
I strongly believe that everyone can enjoy and connect with history when it is explained clearly and linked to human stories, experiences, and ideas. While academic texts can sometimes feel intimidating, I aim to help students break complex topics down into understandable narratives and develop confidence in their own thinking and writing. My approach is entirely supportive, adaptable, and tailored to each student’s individual interests and learning style.
Whether a student needs help improving essay structure, understanding historical debates, preparing for exams, or simply building confidence in the subject, I aim to create a relaxed and encouraging environment where curiosity and critical thinking can grow.

My approach to tutoring is flexible, supportive, and tailored to the individual student. I understand that every student learns differently, so I adapt lessons depending on their confidence level, goals, and areas they would like to improve. This could include general support with classwork and revision, focused preparation for GCSE or A-Level exams, essay-writing guidance, source analysis, historiography, or broader historical understanding and discussion.
As a mature History graduate currently based in West London, I bring both academic and life experience with a consultative and approachable teaching style. I am passionate about public history, therefore helping students contextualise their subject matter, building their writing skills, argument construction, critical thinking, and exam technique — skills that are valuable well beyond history itself.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes, although longer or shorter sessions can be arranged depending on the student’s needs. I am happy to teach online or discuss in-person tutoring where practical.
My teaching style combines:
- discussion
- structured guidance
- active engagement with historical sources
- Interpretation skills and interpretations
Rather than only memorising facts, I encourage students to understand why historical debates matter and how making connections between events assists with memory, and can lead to developing their own informed arguments.
I work to a relaxed and encouraging ethos, and ensure students feel comfortable asking questions and developing confidence at their own pace.
I primarily offer tutoring for GCSE and A-Level students, but I am also happy to discuss support for university applicants, undergraduate students needing help with essays or study skills, and adult learners with an interest in history.
