  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I developed an interest in STEM from a very young age. I always found myself succeeding in science and math courses and was often looking to help out others in my classes. It wasn't until high school where I truly realized my passion for the sciences, in particular biology and chemistry. While math and physics came easy to me and I always enjoy teaching them, biology is where I fell in love with learning. I realized that I didn't have to stop learning once school was over, and I have sought out research positions in the field of biology as a career ever since. Now I am pursuing a PhD and hope to never stop learning new things in the field, because the vast array of knowledge that exists in science is what keeps my passion alive.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I am passionate about the sciences because I truly believe there is something out there for everyone. Whether it's in the chemical composition of our planet, the blood flowing through our bodies, or the forces that hold together our universe... There will always be something that astounds everyone about science. Even children can be so fascinated by science with the little knowledge they have, it just comes from exploring the world around them. This is why I've chosen to turn my science career passions into tutoring young people. There's so many students that think they aren't suited for these subjects due to unfortunate education experiences, but I believe that a lot of them can begin to see the wonder in the sciences when taught the right way. Science isn't supposed to be hard and I believe anyone can have a career in them regardless of what they've been told in school.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

As mentioned, I've been helping my classmates since I was in elementary school. It wasn't until grade 10 when I realized that I could extend my passion to strangers who also needed my help. This is when I started volunteering as a tutor and fell in love with it. Even though I'm a full-time graduate student I still make the decision to tutor because I will never stop loving that feeling of seeing a student finally understand, or having a wonderful connection with a student about a common source of knowledge. I think what truly makes me a Superprof is that I don't think of myself as a tutor, I simply think of myself as someone who enjoys having educational conversations. I never treat my sessions as just a way to help a student get better grades, I think of it more as my duty to help them come to conclusions on their own, spark their passions and understanding, and with that naturally comes better school performance. Sometimes I don't even tutor students who need help, we simply just go ahead and explore the field of STEM together, both learning new things. Tutoring helps me just as much as it helps my students!
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

My role model has always been my grade 7/8 elementary school teacher. He taught me that school isn't about our performance, but about the connections we make along the way. If I can help a student cope with their classes or provide advice, I find that more valuable than any grade a student could get on a test. A lot of school is about having confidence in your abilities and trusting that you can achieve whatever you want, and this is what my role model made me realize at a very young age. This advice has taken me through countless hours of school, and is the reason why I have achieved everything I have today. He showed me the book Tuesdays with Morrie, I recommend any educator or student read it. A quote from that always sticks with me... "A teacher affects eternity; they can never tell where their influence stops."
  • What are your keys to success?

My number one key to success is effort. Effort comes from reading, practicing, doing your homework, asking questions, and simply trying your absolute hardest to succeed. The main thing I see in my students who are unsuccessful in their classes is that they lack effort. My tutoring sessions can only help a student understand, but their efforts is what will change their performance. I have a friend who didn't do well in all math and science courses, and was told countless times that they wouldn't succeed. However, they kept trying, and despite not having great marks and not even getting into university, they are now a successful scientist going on to complete their bachelor's. Our systems are designed to make us believe only one type of student can succeed in the sciences, but the sciences are for everyone and as long as you put in the effort you can achieved your goals from all different pathways of life!
