About Joe
I qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Oxford, took a Masters in the History and Philosophy of Science and a DPhil (PhD) in neurophysiology. For over 20 years I have helped medical students understand how the human body works (and sometimes doesn't) through lectures, small group tutorials and practicals. I help students navigate the body through human dissection, microscopy and 'living anatomy'. I have worked as a doctor in the UK and in Zimbabwe, planned the building of a new hospital for women and children in India, advised successive governments on healthcare and life science projects.

I employ a style of teaching that engages students in discussion and debate, bringing the qualities of an Oxford Tutorial to students at every level. Lessons last one hour, with students expected to have undertaken independent study in anticipation to maximise the value of the lesson. Having given lectures, practical and tutorials at the University of Oxford for 20+ years I have extensive experience of teaching. I am also the author of 250 papers and articles in medicine and education. I advised NHS England on their policy for people with learning disabilities, and have clinical experience working with children with dyslexia, ADHD and ASD, areas where I have published new theories regarding their origins and treatment. I am comfortable teaching at all levels through to post-doctoral students.
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by students with Joe.
Perfect! We are fortunate to have the expertise that Joe offers. His teaching has given our daughter a genuine taste of university-level learning, while his experience as a doctor brings the subject to life with real-world insight and depth.
Joe is exceptionally knowledgeable and has a remarkable ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and engaging way. Rather than simply providing answers, he encourages independent thinking by asking our daughter to research topics and write essays before discussing them together. This approach has enabled her to explore ideas for herself, with his guidance helping to clarify and deepen her understanding.
His teaching style is stimulating and thought-provoking, and his depth of knowledge has provided our daughter with valuable opportunities to explore the subject in greater detail and develop her understanding from a different perspective.- Siva's daughter Unna is a quick and reflective learner. She is organised and committed and I look forward to continuing to work with her. She is fortunate to have supportive parents as she prepared to start her medical education.Joe's response :
