I'm a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist with 20 years of professional experience with a wide range of individuals, but I am also a Buddhist and meditator. h
My lessons begin with the basics of relaxation and meditation -- focus on breathing, letting go of intrusive thoughts or sensations, and achieving inner-focused state of calmness and acceptance. From there we expand to integrating centered and reflective attitudes and thoughts into daily life. Finally, we take a look at how Buddhist philosophy, and mindfulness practice, can be integrated into a personally meaningful life experience through the key principles of Buddhist philosophy of acceptance, openness to experience, honesty, relinquishing of both fear and acquisitiveness (materialism, greed, ambition, envy), and selflessness.
The core of my teaching comes from many years as a therapist (individual, family, group), as well as a Buddhist: caring about others, unconditional acceptance and empathy, competence and knowledge about physical and mental health (diet, substance use, exercise, stress response, anxiety/fear, depression), social and family relationships, conflict resolution, habit and behavior change strategies. I have worked with individuals across the full lifespan, from infants to the elderly, and individuals with all forms of developmental, health and behavioral conditions, learning problems, gifted and talented and autistic. The key for me is to convey caring and playfulness, while at the same time, maintaining the highest level of professional competency and responsibility.
I have been a therapist as well as supervisor and teacher for over 20 years. Over the years I have worked with thousands of clients, and dozens of graduate and post-graduate students. Most of my former students are now themselves both clinicians and educators -- including many who are full university professors, department heads, directors of various clinics and educational programs. Many of my former clients are now in higher levels of education or employment, despite having had fairly severe forms of mental health issues. Both my students and clients tend to stay in touch with me for years after our work together, and they carry with them that inner peace and acceptance that comes from the experience of being truly cared about by another.
I have a BA, MA and PhD, consistent 4.0 GPA. I published two refereed journal articles based on my research on diet, body weight and appetite prior to entering graduate school at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. My awards included the Governor General's Gold Medal Award for Academic Excellence in Psychology, Natural Sciences, Medical Research Council grant, $1M NJ Governor's Autism Services Grant, and the Autism New Jersey "Autism Provider of the Year," award in 2010.
