About Amanda
If I should characterize myself with three words only, I would pick enthusiasm, drive, and commitment. This is true in both my personal life and teaching. I am committed to my roles of wife, mother, and teacher, and try my best in every interaction with fellow human beings. If you are interested in some details and numbers, I can tell you that I’ve graduated from York College of PA in 2010, began teaching at Fernwood Middle School in 2012, and have been teaching ever since. I have been married since 2012, and we have a son and a daughter together. Please tell me if you’d like me to elaborate on any aspect of my professional life.

Essential Question: In communicating with others, how do we use literal and figurative language to write,
speak, and present effectively? How does poetry contribute to our understanding of self, others, and the world?
Objective: LWBAT analyze a variety of poetic forms, recognize a variety of figurative language, and explain personal and/or world connections to the themes and author's purpose in poetry.
Instructional Process:
1. Independent Reading (10-20 min.): Students will have an opportunity to read independently, then practice skills and strategies learned through their minilessons, or strengthen their reading/writing skills on Lexia PowerUp.
2. Mini-Lesson: (10 min): Students will be introduced to a poetry project where they will be reading poetry by African American poets while creating their own poem for Black History Month. We will have a poetry slam in class once students have completed the writing process.
3. Independent/Group Practice (20 min): Students will work independently to read poems from African American poets to get exposure to different structures, formats, and concepts of poetry while creating their own piece. The poetry slam will be March 2nd and 3rd in class. Students have received a rubric to follow in order to be prepared for the presentation aspect of this poetry unit.
4. Debrief (5 min): Students will review the what they read and discuss.
